How much time will the whole surgery take?
The TKR surgery will take almost 1 to 2 hours.
When will I be able to stand up after the surgery?

The implant’s longevity is more than a lifetime of the patient, new implants will last till 20-25 Years and even more.
Will I be able to walk and climb stairs?

Though it can vary from patient to patient, but generally the stay is around 3 to 5 days.

Which activities will be restricted for my whole life?
With the newer implants, no daily activity will be hampered and you will be able to function fully without even remembering that you have had a replacement surgery. However, some sports activities like jumping and long time running will need to be avoided if possible.
When will I be able to return to work?
You will be able to sit and work after 4 weeks and even earlier depending upon your will power and recovery.

The main steps of Total Hip replacement are as follows:
- The damaged portion of the pelvis as well as the thigh bone (femur) will be removed in order to accommodate the artificial implants well.
- The acetabulum(socket on the pelvis bone) is the fitted with an artificial socket.
- The femur stem is replaced with a sturdy metal alloy implant.
- A spacer is provided between the two to ensure a smooth movement of the joint.
- The surgery can be both with or without the bone cement, depending upon the age and the medical condition of the patient.Generally we prefer non-cemented in the young and cemented in the elderly patients.
Alternate treatments of total hip replacement are temporary such as stem cell treatment and corticosteroid injections etc. If the hip replacement procedure is due to avascular necrosis then hip replacement is the only option.
This is one of the most commonly performed joint replacement surgery with the best results, that’s why it has been described as ‘The Operation of the Century’. In this surgery the part of the pelvic bone(Acetabulum) and the hip bone(Head, neck and stem of Femur) that connects with it, both are replaced with the artificial components.
The Acetabulum is like a cup which is made up of high density polyethylene component, the hip bone components are made up of metal alloys (Chromium-Cobalt Alloy).
They can be fixed both with or without cement.
